Lana’s Story

The picture shows a woman with light brown curly hair smiling at the camera holding an infant with bright frizzy hair eating a piece of bread

Lana Deaton is one of our BBO participants. She originally qualified with a Foundation Degree in Spa Management and Beauty Therapy but since having her 2 children has wanted to change her direction and achieve some qualifications to help her follow her passion for working with animals. After becoming a full-time mum, Lana has lost her confidence in herself and her ability outside of being a parent.

Since getting in touch and joining the project, Lana has started a Zoology Degree with a Foundation year at Anglia Ruskin. She has reviewed her CV and also learnt ways to reflect her skills and qualities in relation to a company job advert.

Lana’s mentor Tim said “Lana has improved in her own ability and confidence taking challenges faced along the way and dealing with them head on. Lana’s journey to her starting her degree was a roller coaster ride of emotion and possible issues, however Lana remained positive throughout never giving up.

Lana has improved her written ability when applying for work, when I started work with her, applications were unfocussed and rambling. Lana now understands how to structure these and reflect her skills and abilities positively in relation to what the employer is looking for.

“I want to thank Tim, Alison, and Krissy, for all of their help and advice in helping to build up my confidence and to strive towards doing something for myself, to follow my dreams! Without the gentle nudges and many phone calls and a few zoom meetings, I don’t know if I would have had the confidence to go to University.”

“I have learned a lot about myself and you have all helped me to look to the future and to work on being a more positive person, to believe positivity attracts positivity. I have come a long way since the first time I joined Norfolk Community College. I am continuing to grow and learn about myself, I’m on a long journey of self-discovery.”

“I have continually been able to congratulate Lana for taking the lead in her own personal development often giving Lana a task to complete and her completing these with limited support and in a timely manner. I have seen Lana’s confidence in herself improve considerably and she is now focussing on finding herself again rather than just being a wife and mother. Lana is excited to see where her future takes her and happy that she can be a positive role model for her children”. – Tim
